Dubai Airport expands using Microsens networking technology

The following Press Release nicely describes how Microsens Fibre Optic Microswitches can be used in large public buildings and infrastructure projects to reduce costs while building a higher bandwidth Infrastructure that is much more reliable, uses less energy and is more future safe than Ethernet switches over copper.

Hamm, 20 September 2011. Microsens, one of the leading providers of fiber optic transmission systems, has received a large order for more than 7,000 network components  (switches) for the multi-billion dollar expansion of Dubai Airport. Microsens switches will be used to create a high-performance fiber optic network in the international airport's new eleven-storey C3 terminal building. The Microsens Fiber to the Office (FTTO) concept will be employed in an area measuring approximately 11,000 square metres; the components' special design makes an intelligent combination of fiber optic and copper connection technologies possible. The Microsens technology meets the considerable challenge of supplying the approximately 50 ticket and check-in desks, hotels, and businesses with highperformance data transmission. These standards also apply to the new building's 20 gates,  most of which are set up to manage the Airbus 380—currently the largest aircraft in civil aviation. Microsens' FTTO technology guarantees the high bandwidth needed over large transmission distances, while also meeting the airport's high standards in terms of both data security and energy efficiency.

Financial considerations were another key factor in the decision to install a fiber optics network using Microsens switches: by consulting with Microsens, network architects were able to reduce the number of distribution rooms needed from 144 to 11 compared to exclusively copper-based cabling and network technologies. This increases the amount of  usable space available to businesses and airport management in the new building. The FTTO concept helps reduce the overall costs of purchasing, installing, and maintaining cabling technology and intermediate distributors. Furthermore, the Microsens concept contributes to a significant reduction of IT-related operational and energy costs, since the decentralised approach makes air conditioning and uninterrupted power supply (UPS) equipment largely unnecessary.

Dubai Airport is becoming one of the most important transport hubs for passenger and freight air traffic between Europe and Asia. This requires solid investments in future-proof networking technologies that can be adapted to suit new requirements easily and costefficiently. Microsens' FTTO concept is well prepared for this: the system can be upgraded to new technologies by simply exchanging active network components, and passive cabling can remain in place during expansions.

Planning for the new C3 terminal building began around five years ago. The original plans included a copper-based network. This changed, however, when Microsens consultants presented the hybrid FTTO concept with fiber optic technology and explained the benefits it would provide the airport. The provider was awarded a contract for more than 7,000 switches to be used in network infrastructure, to be delivered between September and  December 2011. Work on C3 was successfully completed at the beginning of 2013.
